Shibari Relief – A Kinky Artists’ Fundraiser for disaster relief in Japan

I just found out about this fantastic fundraiser for disaster relief in Japan via Jiz Lee’s most excellent blog. Each bit I try to write about my feelings about the earthquake and donating to life-saving organizations likeThe Red Cross (the beneficiary of the auction this Sunday) and Doctors Without Borders leaves me inarticulate and overwhelmed with feelings, so I’ve simply copy+pasted the beautifully-worded press release from the Shibari Relief website and hope that you’ll go.

If you are in the Bay Area this weekend, please consider attending the auction and/or visiting Wicked Grounds.

Shibari Relief is Sunday, March 27th!

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you know that Japan has been hit by a tremendous disaster: one of the worst earthquakes in history, followed quickly by a massive tsunami, and currently a potential nuclear disaster. The humanitarian efforts involved in dealing with this situation are and will be tremendous for a very long time to come. We feel helpless as we watch this tragedy unfold before us. But we don’t have to be helpless. We can come together as a community and in a show of support, raise funds for the much needed work that is to come. It is the very least that we can do.

‘Shibari Relief, a kinky artists’ fundraiser for disaster relief in Japan’ is Sunday, March 27th, 2011, from 2-5 p.m. at Wicked Grounds, 289 8th St. in San Francisco. Please come hang out with us, drink some fabulous coffee or indulge in a milkshake, and help support our friends in Japan.

Mark I Chester and Patti Beadles are organizing Shibari Relief. There will be a silent auction/sale and raffle of BDSM art, sexual art and other related items. There is no door fee, but a suggested $20+ donation can be given at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. 100% of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross earmarked for disaster relief in Japan.

For your donation and silent auction purchases, if you write a check directly to the American Red Cross, we will mail it to them and they’ll send you a tax deductible receipt for your donation. We are working on you also being able to make an electronic donation directly to the American Red Cross and hope to have that all set by the time of the benefit.

Some of the artists who will be offering their work and related items include:

Mark I Chester – photography and a signed copy of “Diary of a Thought Criminal”

Other BDSM and sexual artists and other related items will be announced on this website as that information becomes available.

As a special added bonus, anyone making a donation at the door will get a ticket to get two free digital pix taken by San Francisco gay radical sex photographer, Mark I Chester at his studio at 1229 Folsom St., just 1/2 block from Wicked Grounds, from 3-5pm during the fundraiser.

So please come join us. We know what it is like to live on a fault line.

On a mostly-unrelated side note, I seem to be incapable of spelling relief correctly today – my brain forgets the ‘i before e’ rule each time I type it and turns it into releif, the imaginary half sibling of Leif Eriksson.
